Varicose veins in young women: why they appear and how to treat them without surgery

Although they have traditionally been associated with older age, varicose veins (spider veins) in young women are becoming increasingly common. Factors such as a sedentary lifestyle, long-term use of high heels, genetic predisposition, or hormonal changes —whether due to contraceptive use, pregnancy, or the menstrual cycle— can affect venous circulation even from the age of 20 or 30. Varicose veins are not only an aesthetic concern but also a vascular health issue that can cause a feeling of heaviness, swelling, or leg cramps. Being overweight and having an unbalanced diet can worsen the situation, as they increase pressure on the legs and hinder circulation. Detecting them early allows for simpler and more effective treatment.

Fortunately, there are now modern, minimally invasive treatments that improve both the appearance and health of the legs without the need for surgery. Among the most effective are sclerotherapy, which uses microinjections to progressively eliminate varicose veins, and vascular laser treatment, which acts directly on dilated vessels to close them accurately and safely. In addition, pressotherapy is an excellent complementary tool, as it improves circulation and reduces the feeling of heaviness.

Beyond treatments, prevention plays a key role. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in fiber and low in salt, avoiding sedentary habits, exercising regularly, keeping the skin hydrated, and wearing compression stockings during long periods of standing or sitting are essential habits to protect venous health. It is also recommended to elevate the legs while resting to promote venous return.

Varicose veins are not exclusive to later life. Taking care of circulation from an early age and treating the first signs of venous insufficiency with a medical approach helps maintain healthy legs, prevent complications, and improve overall well-being without surgery.
